Pressure in Leadership
Pressure in Leadership: Carrying Responsibility Without Cracking
Pressure doesn’t always shout. Often it just sits there, constant and heavy.
Leadership pressure rarely announces itself. It sits in the background while you get on with the day: decisions, people, outcomes, consequences. From the outside, everything can look fine. Inside, the weight can be relentless.
Most of it comes from caring. You want to get it right, and you know what it costs if you don’t.
The armour of busyness
The mistake many leaders make is pretending the pressure isn’t getting to them. They push through, bottle it up and wear busyness like armour. But pressure that isn’t managed always leaks out somewhere: into your health, your relationships, your patience and your judgement.
Manage it, don’t ignore it
Good leaders don’t make pressure disappear. They manage it. They talk it through, share the load, and build peer support around them so they’re not carrying everything on their own.
Commit to the shot
Pressure handled well is like a good golf shot. You pick your target, trust your swing and strike it clean. Pressure ignored is the rushed backswing you won’t admit to, the one that slices the ball into the trees while you insist you meant it.
