The Purpose Playbook: Knowing Why You’re Still in the Game

When business gets hard, purpose is the quiet answer to “Why am I doing this?”

Purpose isn’t a slogan on the wall. It’s the answer you give yourself at 11pm when the numbers don’t add up and you wonder why you bother.

For some, purpose is impact. For others, it’s freedom, security, legacy or growth. It often changes over time, and that’s perfectly normal. What matters is staying connected to it.

Why it matters

Without purpose, business becomes mechanical. You hit targets without meaning and wonder why success feels flat. With purpose, even the tough spells make sense, because they’re part of something bigger.

Purpose doesn’t remove problems. It gives them context.

In our experience, the leaders who revisit their purpose regularly make clearer decisions, set firmer boundaries and stay the course longer. Not because it’s easy, but because it’s worth it to them.

Pick your landmark

Purpose is like picking a landmark before you swim out from the beach. The sea won’t always be calm, but having a fixed point stops you drifting, wasting energy or fighting the wrong current.

Ask yourself: if someone asked you today why your business exists, beyond the money, what would you say?
