Uncertainty: Staying Steady When Nothing Stays Still

Leading Well When Nothing Is Certain

You can’t control the storm, but you can control how you steer through it

If there’s one thing every business owner learns, it’s that nothing stays still for long. Costs rise, markets shift, a major client restructures, new technology changes the game. Uncertainty isn’t a phase that passes. It’s simply part of running a business.

Why it’s so draining

When we don’t know what’s coming, our minds fill the gap with worst-case scenarios. That leads to sleepless nights and decisions driven by fear. Some owners freeze and put everything off. Others overreact and cut too deep, too fast. Neither ends well.

Focus on what you can control

On the golf course, I can’t control the wind. I can control my club choice, my stance and my swing. Business is the same. You can’t control interest rates or the economy, but you can control:

  • Your cash: a healthy buffer is the best protection against surprises.
  • Your client spread: relying on one or two customers leaves you exposed.
  • Your costs: knowing where the money goes lets you act quickly.
  • Your relationships: loyal clients and suppliers stick with you through tough times.
  • Your response: how you react shapes how your team feels.

Plan for scenarios, not predictions

What would you do if sales dropped by a fifth? What if a big opportunity landed tomorrow? Rough plans for both mean you can act calmly rather than scramble.

Lead with honesty

Your team doesn’t need all the answers, just the truth: what you know, what you don’t, and what you’re doing about it. And don’t carry it alone. Other business owners are facing the same conditions, and they may have already found something that works.

Try this: write down your three biggest worries for the year ahead, and next to each, one action within your control.
