Upskilling: A Fresh Blend of Skills
Keep Learning, Keep Growing
The skills that got you here won’t always get you where you want to go
Most people start a business because they’re good at something. A great electrician sets up alone. A talented designer opens a studio. A brilliant accountant starts a practice.
Then reality hits. Suddenly you need to understand marketing, manage people, read a balance sheet, negotiate contracts and keep up with technology that changes every few months.
Why learning slips down the list
Business owners invest in everyone’s training except their own. There’s always a job to finish or an invoice to chase. But standing still has a cost. Competitors adopt new tools, customers expect more and regulations change.
A fresh blend
A few weeks ago I treated myself to a fruit milkshake. Nothing fancy, just a few good ingredients blended together, and it was exactly the refresher I needed. Upskilling works the same way. Add one or two new ingredients to what you already know, and the whole thing tastes better.
Where to focus
Be honest about your gaps. Common ones include finance, leadership, sales, digital and AI tools, and delegation. Pick the one that would make the biggest difference right now.
Learning that fits your week
It doesn’t have to mean a week-long course. Short online modules, podcasts, books, webinars and local workshops all count. So does an hour with a business owner who’s already solved your problem. Block an hour a week and protect it like a client meeting.
And bring your team with you. Their growth makes the whole business stronger.
Try this: write down the one skill that would make the biggest difference this year, then book your first hour of learning.
